Your host is in Frankfurt. Your customers are in Sandton. That gap is costing you money.

Physics beats marketing

A page request from Johannesburg to a server in Europe crosses roughly 150 million metres of cable and fibre, twice, before the browser even starts painting. Add routing, TLS handshakes and a few proxies and a simple page load easily eats 300 milliseconds before your app does any work at all. No CDN banner fixes that. The speed problem most South African sites have is geographic, so the fix has to be geographic too.

Your data laws stop at the water line

POPIA is enforced now, and the Information Regulator publishes enforcement notices with company names in them. Kenya and Nigeria run similar rules. Hosting locally will not make your compliance problems disappear, but it answers the hardest question in any audit: where does personal data actually live, and who can reach it. If you cannot answer that, ask your hosting provider. If the answer is a shrug, that is your answer about them.

What 3am support looks like

The real difference between a local host and an overseas one shows up at the worst possible hour. One side answers in your timezone and knows which load-shedding schedule your rack sits on. The other side points you at a ticket queue and a knowledge base written for Germany.

The rest is table stakes: daily backups kept off-server, DDoS mitigation in front of your apps, SSL renewals that happen without anyone remembering, an uptime SLA with credits we have actually paid out, and invoices in rand instead of dollars so your bill does not swing with the exchange rate.
