A domain name is the cheapest thing your business will ever buy and one of the hardest to undo. Print it on flyers and letterheads, and a bad choice lives with you for years.
Boring beats clever
Here is the test that matters: if a customer hears your address on the radio, can they type it without asking how it is spelled? That one question rules out hyphens, invented respellings, and whatever clever thing your friend suggested at a barbecue. Short, slightly dull, easy to say out loud. Your domain is an address first, branding second.
.co.za, .com, or the clever new ones
For South African businesses, .co.za signals local trust and .com travels when you need to look international. Register both if you can afford it, which is barely anything, and point them at the same site. People will type the wrong one regardless of how you feel about it. Skip the exotic extensions unless you have a real reason.
Where the money goes is worth thinking about too. The .co.za registry is ZADNA, right here in South Africa, but many of the big overseas registrars are middlemen charging rent on their brand name. A locally accredited registrar usually costs less, drops the upsell theatre, and keeps the rand in the country instead of in Arizona.
Make sure it is actually yours
This is the part nobody checks until it hurts. Before you pay anyone, find out whose name sits on the registration. If your web designer registered the domain under their own account, you do not own your business address, they do. It is a bad conversation to have for the first time when you switch providers. Register it yourself, with your own card, in your own name. If you need someone else to manage the DNS later, give them access without giving up ownership.
Then turn on auto-renew and make sure the renewal notices go to an inbox your business controls. Every year, real companies lose real domains because a reminder landed in one person's personal Gmail and that person moved on.
Olorun Cloud registers .co.za, .com and .africa domains with instant activation, in your name from day one, on infrastructure that keeps the site fast where your customers actually are. If you already have a domain and have no idea who holds it, ask us and we will walk you through finding out.
