Odoo is good for a business owner in the same way a car is good for someone who has never checked the oil. The software itself is genuinely fine. Underneath it sits a server that needs somebody every week, whether anything feels urgent or not.
The upgrade nobody booked
A major version upgrade of a live Odoo instance is a project, not a button. Your data has to move, custom modules have to be ported, and half of them were written by a developer who has since moved to Durban. Odoo changes how it stores attachments or builds accounting reports between versions, and what worked last year quietly stops working. Most self-hosters deal with this by freezing at the version they installed. Three years later they are on an unsupported release that cannot take security fixes, and they find that out the hard way.
The boring half
The upgrades are at least visible. The rest is not. Someone runs the nightly backups and tests the restores. Someone patches the database server the week a security advisory lands. Someone notices the disk is at ninety percent. When Odoo lives on your own server, all of that is your job. It does not go away because you never hired anyone for it. It just waits.
The maths people skip
Self-hosting looks cheap next to a managed monthly fee. Then price in the hours your engineer burns fighting a broken update, the slow database at month end, the migration you panic-pay for when the old server finally dies. The managed fee usually wins that argument, and it wins it before you ever have it. Free software is expensive at the point where the invoice moves somewhere nobody tracks: your own time.
When self-hosting does make sense
In fairness, there are cases where it is the right call. If you have a technical person whose actual job is keeping servers alive, and your ERP is wired deep into custom hardware on a factory floor, self-hosting gives you control a managed box cannot match. If that does not describe you, and it describes almost nobody reading this, you want someone else watching the logs at three in the morning.
